Agent Smith has a gig at The Grand. It’s going to be huge. The Grand sounds like an enormous glitzy modern awe-inspiring venue, but it’s actually way better than that. It’s out the back of an old pub – as so many rock venues are – all crumbling brick and worn carpet. It’s epically cool and I’m stoked to be here.

Max and Nate arrive and we start to set up. After the usual greetings and gear chat, Max asks, ‘Paige, what exactly happened at Emily’s party? Taylor said things got a bit out of hand. Are you okay?’

‘On Monday? And by the way, who the hell has a party on a Monday night?’

‘You’re a brave woman. I mean, even I don’t go to those parties and I don’t give a fuck what day of the week it is.’ Max is frowning. He actually looks concerned.

Nate nods, ‘It’s true, he doesn’t.’

‘I just didn’t know what sort of party it was going to be. I guess I was at a loose end and didn’t feel like staying home.’ My voice sounds whiney and young as if I’m explaining myself to Dad. ‘Anyway, I fled in the thick of it – as I am becoming known for doing.’

‘I strongly suggest staying clear of that particular group of mates. They’re into some messed up shit and partying on a Monday night is the least of it. They’re into some pretty heavy drugs.’

‘I didn’t take any drugs!’ I wonder what Taylor told them.

‘Good! That stuff will mess you up,’ Nate says.

I can’t believe it. If the two loosest guys in Melbourne are telling me to be careful, I guess I should take it as a pretty serious warning. ‘I just called someone a bitch and made Taylor mad. No biggie.’

‘Yeah, Emily, Taylor said. He was hoping to hook up with her and you blew it for him.’ Max chuckles. I feel bad. I’m not doing so well at making friends. ‘Anyway, no judgement, I just wanted to check you’re okay,’ Max says, tightening his drums.

‘Thanks, Max. I’m okay.’ Am I though?

Taylor is the last to arrive, which is unusual for him.

‘Hey …’ I start, but he’s in efficiency mode and breezes past me. Soundcheck should have started half an hour ago.

We play through the first tunes of our set to get the levels right. With the more melodic bass parts, the songs have filled out and Taylor and Nate play their parts together harmoniously. We’re creating a cool rock sound, like proper old rock and roll. It’s different to the indie-pop and garage-rock I’m used to playing, and more interesting technically, harking back to something deeper and maybe even more important than 90s grunge (though I would never tell Spike or Ed that).

The Grand is a solid place to play, and the backline and sound desk are well set up. The green room, however, is basically a corner of the pantry by the kitchen, with some drinks in a cooler for the band. We hover there for a bit, but Max and Nate want to go out to the bar.
